Going to the Philippines, Volcano Taal- should I do a prepackaged tour or explore on own?

Volcano Taal- have you ever been there?

should I do the horseback riding to the edge of the lava? Or should I go exploring on my own?
Have you had a great experience there?

I'm planning this day for my group and need some tips/ advice!!

Explore on your own. It is cheaper, and more exciting.

Go down the ridge from Tagaytay to Talisay, via the Ligaya Drive. This is the best route because the road is scenic, and is made of concrete. Unlike the zugzag road from the Tagaytay rotunda.

When you get to Talisay, turn right and go to Barangay Leynes, until you see the Gloria de Castro signage. Gloria de Castro is the pioneer in Taal Volcano tourism, and was doing this way before the place became popular. Now, there are several resorts to choose from. Unfortunately, Typhoon Ondoy damaged Aling Gloria's property. However, if you stop at Aling Gloria's, you will see in front of you several young men actually waiting for tourists that they can guide to Volcano Island. Look fro Edmond, he used to work for Aling Gloria.

You can rent a boat to Volcano Island, and hire horses from there. A pre-packahed tour will cost you nearly double the price vs doing it as I described it.
