Can lots of car shops work on rotary engines?

I'm thinking about getting a Mazda RX-8 but i'm worried that if i'm in a tight spot and need something to be repaired, I want to be able to bring it in to the nearest shop and have them be able to work on it. Can only a few select shops work on rotaries, or are they rather common nowadays?

Very few mechanics are even aware of what makes a rotary engine run and that includes a few that I have met at Mazda dealerships. Oh; they can work on the ancillary systems of the car but they are lost when they get into the internals of a rotary motor.
